*If you're still having doubts about the impact of social media comments/links on organic search results
*If you are still clinging to thinking page rank is what you need
*If you are still spending your time submitting URLs to directories
*If you are still sending emails begging for links instead of begging for comments
*If you still think building forum profiles is a good investment of your time
Then you most likely have not gotten your head wrapped around the concept that computer programs are only tools to enable humans to screw things up much faster and with less accountabililty BUT HUMANS ARE RELEVANT!
When a search engine SPIDERS for html LINKS, the spiders are manipulated by humans with an agenda. When the spiders find LINKS, far too many of those are manipulated by humans with an agenda.
So of these items, which do YOU think is relevant?
- Spider
- Links
- Agenda
- Humans
So, if your goal was to increase shareholder value, year after year, day after day and minute after minute, and your business model was selling advertising near content that was displayed in response to a user generated search, then you want as many people as possible doing those searches where YOU control the results. In order to keep as many consuming eyeballs going where you control the displayed content, it is imperative that you establish THE PERCEPTION OF RELEVANCY in the minds of those consuming eyeballs.
So, what would you rely on more to determine what your best chance of delivering that PERCEPTION OF RELEVANCY? Spidered links, or humans with a known history having a conversation about a searchable topic? Google thought it was the spiders and guess what? They got their ass handed to them by Facebook. OUCH! That had to sting!
Maybe you should consider a few statistics if you are still harboring doubts.
* During the average 20-minute period in 2010, there were: 15,870,000 wall posts, 2,716,000 photos uploaded and 10,208,000 comments posted. (AllFacebook.com)
* Since April, Twitter has gained 40 million users and a 62 percent increase in mobile use of the platform (Source: ClickZ)
* Social networking site usage grew 88 percent among Internet users aged 55-64 between April 2009 and May 2010 (Pew Research)
* The change in social media use among Baby Boomers 55-64 rose from 9% in Dec. 2008 to 43% in Dec. 2010 (Marketingcharts.com via David Erickson)
Do I need to go dig up statistics on how many domains there are with hyphens in them that host adsense ads?
How many billions of pages there are that have significantly similar content yet still fly UNDER a duplicate content filter?
How many billions of links there are with spammy sounding anchor text being spidered and indexed every single minute????
Is that what it will take to convince you that humans having conversations about shared experience is far closer to relevant than spidering billions of pages sponsored by adsense and paid linking schemes.
Social media is driving organic search because it makes more sense. Just as Facebook figured out albeit very likely inadvertently.

Who would have known a few years back that social networking websites become so popular. According to Alexa Facebook is second most used website after Google and Twitter comes on #9. There are millions of users for facebook, twitter and linkedin over the world. People use these websites on daily basis. One can easily see how beneficial social media can be for brand awareness and popularity.
Bob, this is the message you have had since you began SEO. You are visionary and the search engines are just now catching on to what you have said all along, RELEVANCY IS DETERMINED BY PEOPLE!
We have spent the last 15+ years being TOLD how to make our sites more relevant to accommodate the non-human approach via human controlled programs and had to if we wanted to survive the Internet jungle to survive.
